CHAPTER NINE
Aaron had left everything at the Fosters’ home – his cell phone, most of his clothes, his books, his comic book. Now, they meant nothing. By the time he and TJ made it back to campus, it took two hours to get permission to remain on-campus in his normal dorm room. With no one expected to be there, there was no food left in the room, but he was beyond exhausted and his appetite was a distant memory.
TJ, concerned with leaving Aaron by himself, decided to stay the night. He slept on their couch in their common room. Strange how things had come full circle. How he had first despised Aaron, and now was the only one in the family Aaron would talk to. Ryan called him last night, telling him he was on his way. TJ talked Ryan out of it. He thought Aaron needed a day to decompress. It was only after Rick talked to Ryan that he decided not to come right away.
Saturday morning came, and though TJ offered to stay longer, Aaron talked him into leaving, telling him that he was just gonna sleep in the morning away. As he was getting to leave, TJ thought, “When it rains it pours. Might as well ask about May.” The two of them were eating bagels and cream cheese that TJ had gotten at Dunkin Donuts.
“Aaron, mind if I ask you a question?” TJ paused, waiting for Aaron’s response.
Aaron was in the middle of eating his bagel, his mouth and hands covered in cream cheese. He nodded his head, unable to speak.
Laughing, TJ handed Aaron several napkins. “Here. Do you need help?” he asked with a grin.
Aaron shook his head; a shy look crossed his face.
“So, what happened in May?”
Aaron stopped what he was doing. Shock crossed his face before he bent his head, looking at his lap and the remainder of his bagel.
“I only ask cause I can’t really remember much from that time. I know something happened. Anyway, mind telling me?”
Aaron paused. “Om, I don’t really remember. Sorry.”
“Sure?”
“Yeah. Sorry.”
“No, that’s fine. I was just hoping you’d remember. Thanks anyway.”
“But I couldn’t help you.”
“I know. No worries. Anyway, you need anything before I go?”
“No. I’m fine.”
“I know you are,” TJ said. He was disappointed that their budding friendship wasn’t enough for Aaron to tell him what happened between the two of them in May. He could tell that Aaron knew exactly what had gone wrong between them. He just hoped Aaron would learn to trust him enough to tell him the truth. But for now, it was time to go back to his life and start working on himself.
“Ryan is driving back on Sunday. He’ll bring your books and cell phone. You’ll be fine by yourself till then?”
“Yeah. I’ll be fine. Thanks for driving me.”
“You’re more than welcome. See you at Christmas.”
“Sure. Okay,” Aaron said, not meeting TJ’s eyes.
****
Aaron didn’t want to think about what had happened over the past couple of days, so he did what he always does when he wanted to avoid things.
